ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe ijnportant architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within the ccmmrnity.)
The Capt. Zenas Crowell House is one of several well detailed Italianate style residences in
Hyannis, most of which are associated with sea captains. This example is typical, facing a
three bay gable end to the street with bracketed cornice and projecting lintels over window
openings. This house is also articulated by paneled corner pilasters and is made somewhat
more complex in form by a rear cross gable and a side porch. The entry is presently located
in the side' porch which has also been glazed. Other alterations include' blocking in of the
western facade windows and addition of fire escapes to the east elevation.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
Capt. Zenas Edwin Crowell was master of deep water ships. According to Trayser, Crowell was
"in command of a full-rigged ship when only twenty-one years of age." (p.298). Trayser also
describes Crowell's home as "that fine house on East Main St.." (p.316). In addition to making
his mark as a successful sea captain, Crowell was elected selectman in 1876 and served for
eight years.
