Visioning Workshop Outline 1 BARNSTABLE LOCAL COMPREHENSIVE PLAN VISIONING WORKSHOP February 28 and March 1 Format There will be two visioning workshops for the Barnstable Local Comprehensive Plan.  A virtual meeting that will be about an hour and a half long and held in the evening.  An in-person meeting that will be up to two hours long and held in the late afternoon with childcare. The content and structure of the two workshops will be the same except that the in-person workshop will include one extra exercise at the end. The meeting dates and times are to be confirmed. Meeting Objectives  Identify Barnstable’s shared community values to drive future decisions related to growth, development, and resource protection  Identify key elements of a consensus-based vision statement for Barnstable  Provide a meaningful and memorable event for meeting participants  Mark a milestone in the local comprehensive plan process Agenda Time Activity 0-4 minutes  Getting settled  Brief welcome by local person 5-25 minutes Presentation  Key themes of input so far. Summarize results of meetings and survey, highlighting town-wide commonalities and noting any significant differences between villages. Preliminary ideas about community values. This could include very brief presentations by representatives of villages.  Trends. Regional and national trends impacting Barnstable. How did Barnstable get where it is? What will be the drivers of change over the coming decades? Trends information will be drawn from existing conditions report. Likely topics: housing, economy transportation, open space/environment, community/equity  What is a vision? 2010 Vision 2 Time Activity 26-70 minutes Breakout groups  Discuss preliminary values. Did what we presented sound accurate? What was missing? Which values are most important?  Discuss 2010 vision (especially the goals). Does it sound generally right? Does it inspire you? What has changed since 2010 that the vision should address? Does anything need to be added or taken away? What challenging decisions might the community face in the future? What should the vision say to provide guidance? 71-85 minutes Report out  The facilitator from each breakout group briefly summarizes the key points of their discussion focusing on shared values and vision elements/goals  In person only: During the report out, the values and vision elements will be captured in a large format written list In the virtual meeting, this section will be followed by closing comments. The virtual meeting will end after 90 minutes. 86-115 minutes This section and the next are for the in-person meeting only Synthesis exercise  Participants do a dotting exercise to indicate the relative importance of the values and vision elements/goals captured from the report out.  The full group discusses any patterns revealed by the dotting and the most important big ideas of the vision 116-120 minutes Closing comments, next steps Note: Times are approximate guidelines.
