Updated and Revised 2023 Guidelines for Selection of the Town of
Barnstable’s Preservation Award Nomination/s for the Barnstable Historical
Commission
1.) Preservation Project Award
The intention is to give the Preservation Project Award to one or
more individuals or organizations that have restored, rehabilitated, or
reconstructed a historic structure, building, property, or landscape in
the town of Barnstable in the year of 20XX,conforming to the Secretary
of the Interior’s Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Property.
2.) Preservation Service Award
Definition of Service Award: “A public service award typically recognizes
uncompensated distinguished public service to a community or the public
through excellence in leadership,or service.
The intention is to give the Preservation Service Award to one
or more individuals or organizations whose acts have shown a
commitment to historic preservation in the town of Barnstable for advocacy
in the preservation of historic property and promotion of interest in historic
preservation.
Quaifying examples include -
researching/preserving/restoring historic structures,documents,
photographs and artifacts of Barnstable’s past
educating the public on our Town’s history
via books, newspaper, lectures, tours, radio, blog, website or other
acceptable media or similar to promote a greater respect for and
understanding of Barnstable’s rich history
fostering historic preservation through participation in organizations
dedicated to promoting and/or preserving Barnstable’s rich
history beyond mere membership (i.e. for service above and
beyond simple membership on a Board, Committee, Commission, Club
or such organization).
Award nominations will be reviewed by Barnstable Historical
Commissioners (BHC). The names of the individuals/organizations
that the BHC accepts as nominees for Preservation Awards will then
be respectfully sent to the Town Council for review and consideration
for Town Council recognition, including the rationale supporting the
recommendation for consideration.
As was the original intention at the inception of these awards, anyone
might submit a nomination.
Fliers will be regularly revised and distributed to various historical
groups/organizations/schools/media, entities with historical interests and
input, possibly suggested to applicants, and posted on the BHC website
task of the Chair) with approval and permission of the Town Council.
There is no limit to the number of awards, and anyone may apply. Any
number of nominations – or none – may be considered annually: to be
recommended by Barnstable Historical Commissioners by a majority
vote of those present, and then recommended with respect to the Town
Council for final selection/s and implementation by the Town Council via
presentation or any means the Town Council judges to be appropriate.
Recusals:Neither the Chair,nor any member of the BHC has the
authority to instruct members to recuse.That is for each member to act
as their conscience dictates,with their obligation to contact the State
Ethics Commission for advice and direction whenever in doubt,as each
commissioner is responsible their for personal acts and decisions.
