COA Artwall applicationHyannis Community Art Wall The Cordial Eye in collaboration with teen artist Will Caolo Overview We propose the creation of a pilot community art wall, approximately 8ʼ high and 64ʼ long, managed by The Cordial Eye Gallery and Artist Space with support from key stakeholders in the neighborhood What is a community art wall? It provides a living exhibition space that can be built upon by professional and amatuer artists alike. Given that there are only 3 other community art walls in the state of MA, it will also become a desired destination for professional muralists and street artists in the region. This particular wall was conceived of by local resident and Barnstable High School student, Will Caolo. This Hyannis Community Art Wall will be unique from traditional community art walls in that it will contain sections for commissioned professional work, as well as free expression space for the art of any community member, whether they are children, young adults, or seniors. -Decrease illegal spray painting -Drives foot traffic to Main Street Hyannis and its businesses -Improves connectivity between the North Street parking lot and Main Street businesses -Encourages a thriving multigenerational arts community Goals of the project The proposed location is the side of 430 Main Street, Hyannis (the former Sturgis High School Annex building). Implementation ●The wall will be created by affixing plywood panels to the side of the building. A group of volunteers have already agreed to do this labor. ●Professional muralists will be commissioned four times per year to paint the wall, as well as provide lectures and workshops to the community regarding public art. ●Community members will be welcomed and encouraged to add to the wall whenever they are moved to do so Community Programming The wall will serve as an educational opportunity for the community, in the form of regularly-scheduled lectures and workshops by visiting artists. There will be a particular emphasis on youth program to help encourage young artists to stay on Cape Cod. Many of these community events will be in collaboration with existing events such as Hyannis Open Streets to help increase attendance and community engagement for all partners. Operations and Maintenance ●The Cordial Eye will manage the artist commissioning process, community programming, and will serve as a general point of contact for oversight and maintenance for the wall. ●The installation is designed to be temporary with any given section able to be removed and replaced. ●The space will be monitored on a daily basis by The Cordial Eye via remote video access. ●The Hyannis Main Street BID currently removes any trash or refuse found in the alley and is committed to continuing that effort after the wall is in operation. Community Support This project has the support of the building owners, Mass Development, the Sturgis High School East fine arts department, the Hyannis Film Festival, local business Seaside Selections, the Hyannis Business Improvement District, and artist Joey Mars, who has agreed to create the inaugural professional work on the wall, as well as provide a free community education event.
